NomCom FAQ

Here is a summary of the most frequent questions we have received so far.

This list will be updated as we go along.

How exactly will the committee work?

The procedures for the NomCom and its work can be found in

The RIPE Chair Selection Process (ripe787)

and

The RIPE Nominating Committee (ripe-788).

Details are at the discretion of the chair and the committee itself. Jan has already stated that he will keep with the traditions of both RIPE and the previous NomCom by working as much as possible by consensus. For details on how that happened last time, please refer to the report of the previous NomCom. It is extremely comprehensive ;-).

The questions below were about volunteering to be selected as a voting member of the NomCom. The deadline for volunteering has since passed.

Why should I volunteer?

‘The RIPE chair ensures that the RIPE community functions well.’

Selecting the next RIPE Chair team has a great impact on how well RIPE will function in the coming five years. It is important that this selection is made by a high quality committee that reflects the diversity of our community well. This can only happen if a significant number of people volunteer to participate.

Who is eligible to volunteer?

In order to volunteer you have to have checked in for three out of the previous five RIPE meetings (RIPE85-89). Remote participation does count if you checked in for the meeting. You can discover that yourself by looking for the green check mark on the attendee lists at

https://ripe89.ripe.net/attend/attendee-list/

https://ripe88.ripe.net/attend/attendee-list/

https://ripe87.ripe.net/attend/attendee-list/

You can also send me mail and I will check for you.

How can I volunteer?

You can volunteer by completing the form at

What is the deadline for volunteering?

The deadline for volunteering is Sunday, December 1st 2024.

How many are eligible?

By looking at the published attendee lists we discovered that the at least 424 people from the community are eligible to volunteer. This is not an exact number because we just looked at published name strings and these are not exactly equivalent to people who attended. There are other factors that make this just an estimate.

How many have volunteered so far?

At the time of this writing 42 people have volunteered. While this number is -of course- the answer 🙂 we are looking for more than that. You can find the current list of volunteers at

https://ripenomcom.org/volunteers/

How big is the chance to be selected?

Ten people will be selected. So the chance to be selected is 10 divided by the total number of volunteers. At the time of this writing the chance is less than 25%. Hint: You can lower the odds by volunteering. 😉

How much work would it be?

The work of the committee will happen around RIPE90. Before RIPE90 the committee will publish a call for nominations and interview the nominees. Around and during RIPE90 the committee will collect feedback from the community. Shortly after RIPE90 the committee will make their selection and be done. The previous committee held 9 meetings of 60-90 minutes by teleconference. I do not expect that this committee will need more meetings.

Would I have to attend RIPE90?

It is not strictly necessary for all committee member to attend RIPE90. The previous committee did never meet physically due to the COVID19 pandemic.

What if I have a conflict of interest?

The previous committee discussed conflicts of interest once the final list of nominees was known. You would be expected to declare any possible conflicts at that time to the committee. The information will be kept in confidence if it is personal or you request that. For details refer to the minutes of the second meeting of the previous NomCom which you can find in their final report.
