Volunteer for the NomCom!

RIPE need excellent leadership. The quality and diversity of the NomCom is an essential element of achieving this. Therefore we need as many of you as possible to come forward to serve the community by volunteering to be a voting member of the RIPE NomCom 2025.

What Does the NomCom Do?

The NomCom selects the next RIPE Chair team to succeed Mirjam and Niall during the autumn RIPE meeting in 2025. First the committee issues a call for nominations, then it collects feedback from the community about the nominees and finally it selects the candidates. All this is governed by the most specific procedures that RIPE has: ripe-787 and ripe-788. The RIPE NCC executive board checks that the NomCom adhered to the process and confirms the selections.

Not Every Volunteer is Selected

The ten voting volunteers on the NomCom will select the next RIPE Chair team. They will be led by the non-voting chair and helped by liaisons and advisors. This is an important job that we should all come forward to participate in. Not everyone gets to serve; the voting members of the NomCom are selected from all volunteers by a random process. In the RIPE NomCom 2020 the chance to get selected was lower than 1:3. This time around we should make it not more than 1:5. This means we need at least 50 volunteers. Volunteers need to have attended at least three of the previous five RIPE meetings:

  • RIPE 89, Parague, Czechia, October 2024
  • RIPE 88, Krakow Poland, May 2024
  • RIPE 87, Rome Italy, 2023
  • RIPE 86, Rotterdam Netherlands, 2023
  • RIPE 85, Belgrade Serbia, 2022

Time Line and Work Load

The NomCom starts its real work in early January 2025 by issuing a call for nominations. Until the deadline of that call there is little work other than canvassing for good people to be nominated. After the deadline has passed the committee starts to solicit feedback from the community about the nominees and interviews them.

Most of the work happens during and immediately after RIPE 90. The committee gathers more feedback during the meeting and meets several times in the following weeks to make the selection. Once that is done there is little left to do: approve the final report and get thanked at RIPE91.

While personal interactions during RIPE90 are important it is not necessary for all people om the committee to attend the meeting in person. All of the real committee work can be done remotely by teleconference and with collaboration tools. The previous NomCom had to work without any physical meetings because of the COVId-19 pandemic.
